Our home-delivered “Meals on Wheels” program serves over 2,800 clients annually. More than 600 volunteers deliver over 326,000 nutritious meals to homebound people who are elderly, ailing, or physically disabled every year.
Packaged along with every meal is the dignity and independence that all people treasure. With their nutritional needs met, and with our concerned volunteers checking on their health and well-being daily, many of our clients can postpone—or eliminate altogether—the need for more extensive and expensive care arrangements.
The history of Mobile Meals of Toledo dates back to the 1960s, when a small group of women set out to establish a home-delivered food program. Their goal was to provide nutritious and tasty food to those who were unable to prepare or obtain adequate meals during periods of convalescing or need. The intention was to serve anyone who would benefit from the program—regardless of income—with an initial emphasis on elderly clients.
The Weekender Program™
The Weekender Program™ provides food to 1,500 children weekly during the school year who would otherwise get inadequate nourishment over the weekend. Students who qualify for free or reduced-cost lunches receive a bag of food every Friday afternoon.
Mobile Meals Foundation
The Mobile Meals Foundation is a not-for-profit, tax-exempt organization whose sole purpose is to support the programs of Mobile Meals of Toledo. We established the Foundation in 2003 to raise money for—and provide faithful stewardship of the funds entrusted to—Mobile Meals.
Through annual fundraising efforts, the Foundation supports our Meal Client Assistance Program. The program provides more than $250,000 in financial assistance annually to Mobile Meals clients who lack the financial resources to buy food and do not qualify for government support.
Pet Food Delivery
Mobile Meals of Toledo volunteers and employees deliver pet food to clients with animal companions during the year. The program originated when staff members and volunteers noticed that many low-income clients who could not afford to buy pet food were sharing their delivered meals with their beloved dogs and cats.
Pet food deliveries occur annually and provide enough food to last several months. The program is supported by donations from the community.
